Record rainfall in California linked to anomalies on Tibetan Plateau

New research shows that record rainfall in California and neighboring states in 2017 and 2023 was caused by unusually high temperatures on the Tibetan Plateau — a so-called climate teleconnection was discovered. A month after each Tibetan hotspot in December 2016 and February 2023, destructive rains appeared in the western U.S., causing losses totaling approximately 6.6 billion dollars. This is the first documented evidence of such a link, which may improve forecasting of extreme weather events.
