EU asylum applications fall 17 percent in first half of year

In the first half of this year, EU and Schengen area countries received 332,000 asylum applications — 17 percent fewer than a year earlier. EU migration commissioner Magnus Brunner attributes the decline to new regulations allowing "return centers" to be created in third countries, such as Albania and Rwanda, to which failed applicants are directed.
