St. Gotthard Tunnel: 57 km through the heart of the Alps, deep as a mine
The St. Gotthard base tunnel in Switzerland, opened 10 years ago, is the world's longest railway tunnel — 57 km long and significantly reduced travel time between northern and southern Europe. Trains cross it in just 20 minutes. The tunnel was drilled deep into the Swiss Alps bedrock.
