Galician peasants ate meat only six times a year in the 19th century

In the second half of the 19th century, residents of Galician villages lived in extreme poverty and for most of the year had to make do with meatless, monotonous diets. An average peasant could not afford meat even once a month — it was consumed only six times a year, a genuine rarity. Meat was thus a special occasion, not part of the everyday diet.
