Siberia awakens as methane source: two distinct climate regimes

New research published in "Science" shows that Arctic warming is creating two distinct climate regimes on either side of the Yenisei River. Western Siberia is becoming increasingly wet, while eastern Siberia is drying out and prone to fires. From 2010–2023, methane emissions from Siberia grew 5% annually: the west emits mainly through microbiological decomposition of thawing permafrost, the east through biomass burning.
