Avalanche in Bezengi gorge on Caucasus kills 12 alpinists, 5 missing
On Sunday, September 6, an avalanche from Mount Mizhirgi (5025 m a.s.l.) in the Bezengi gorge in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic struck a 33-member climbing group. Twelve people died, six were injured, and five remain missing — the death toll may still rise. Rescue operations are hampered by extreme high-altitude conditions and the risk of further avalanches.
