AfD wins Saxony-Anhalt election with 44% of votes, but lacks majority

The far-right Alternative for Germany won the Landtag election in Saxony-Anhalt, taking approximately 44% of votes — a result nearly double the previous one. However, AfD lacks a parliamentary majority needed for independent governance. Friedrich Merz's CDU came second with about 18.5% of votes. AfD's success in this state of 2.1 million residents is a serious blow to parties governing at the federal level.
