The Anzio landing in 1944: why Gen. Lucas squandered the Rome opportunity

On 22 January 1944, the Allies conducted Operation "Shingle" — a landing at Anzio designed to bypass the Gustav Line and open the road to Rome. The Germans were completely surprised, and Gen. John Lucas secured the beachhead without difficulty. Instead of seizing the moment and advancing on Rome, Lucas delayed, allowing the Germans to organize a defense and destroy the chance for quick success.
