NASA funds protein crackers made from plastic waste and yeast

Scientists at Southern Illinois University Carbondale created protein crackers from plant waste and plastic scraps using yeast as part of a NASA program. The invention is meant to provide food in extreme conditions: during natural disasters, on submarines, and during long-term space missions. Yeast breaks down plastic and plant biomass, converting them into an edible protein source.
