Abandoned oil pipelines contaminate oceans with microplastics

Researchers from University of Plymouth and North Carolina State University point to an overlooked source of ocean microplastic pollution: old pipelines and conduits connecting extraction platforms to installations on the seabed. Freija Mendrik, Richard C. Thompson and their colleagues note that such infrastructure is commonly abandoned after exploitation ends. This provides important addition to current knowledge of plastic sources in oceans.
