Pre-human Amazon rarely burned: humans brought the fire
Paleoenvironmental data show that before humans arrived, fires in the Amazon were extremely rare—even in drier regions and at the forest-savanna boundary. Tropical humidity inhibits ignition, and local plants are not adapted to fire. The situation began changing with human settlement of South America.
