Sheeppox virus hidden in medieval parchments since the Bronze Age
An international team of scientists reconstructed the history of sheeppox virus by analyzing DNA from medieval manuscript pages made of animal skins and archaeological material. The genomes obtained are among the oldest known genomes of viruses in the Poxviridae family and reach back to the Bronze Age. This is the same virus family that includes smallpox — the only eradicated human disease.
