End of flexibility in biometric border checks in EU: queues may return
As of September 6, rules allowing EU member states to flexibly apply the Entry/Exit System (EES), which requires fingerprints and facial scans of travelers from outside the Schengen area, expired. Some member states have announced they will not enforce biometric checks. Airlines called on the European Commission to extend discretionary powers until the end of 2026. Travelers may face longer queues at EU borders.
