UN votes to abandon Mercator map for projection showing Africa's true size
The UN General Assembly on Friday adopted a resolution calling for the Mercator map, used since the 16th century, to be replaced with a projection that better represents the true size of countries, particularly Africa. African states submitted the resolution, arguing that the Mercator map diminishes their continent and perpetuates its perception as peripheral. The new projection would better reflect the actual proportions of countries' territories.
