Susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis may begin before birth
Scientists discovered that susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis may have roots before birth. Finger joints, most often affected by this disease, develop with distinct tissue structure and more specialized fibroblasts than joints usually spared by it. These cells also respond differently to inflammation, suggesting joint architecture may determine where arthritis develops.
