Scientists: fat tissue "remembers" obesity and blocks weight maintenance

A study published in Science Translational Medicine by Japanese researchers found yo-yo effect is not due to weak willpower. Macrophages in fat tissue (ATM) — immune cells within fat — retain an epigenetic "trace" of obesity even after weight loss, causing the body to actively seek to regain lost mass. Results from mouse studies were confirmed in human tissue samples.
