Scientists identify protein that blocks damaged nerve regeneration

Scientists have identified the protein AHR, which acts as a brake preventing the nervous system from repairing damaged connections. Blocking it in mice with nerve or spinal cord injuries allowed damaged fibers to regrow and improved movement and sensation. The finding could lead to new therapies that shift neurons from mere survival after injury to active self-repair.
