Statins safely cut heart attack and stroke risk in healthy people over 70
A world-first clinical trial led by Australian researchers has found that statins — common cholesterol-lowering drugs — safely and effectively reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes in people over 70 who are otherwise healthy. The risk of serious side effects was found to be low. Previously, statins were mainly prescribed to under-75s who had additional risk factors such as diabetes or high cholesterol.
