Scientists discover main mechanism behind diabetes drug metformin

Metformin, widely used to treat type 2 diabetes since the 1990s, works primarily by forcing gut cells to absorb and burn extra glucose, scientists have found. It does this by disrupting the mitochondria — the power generators — inside intestinal cells. Researchers at Northwestern University say the drug's complex, multi-organ effects made pinning down a single mechanism difficult for decades.
