Gel converts brain cells into neurons, offering hope for Alzheimer's

A study published in Cell Biomaterials suggests that reducing levels of the protein PTBP1 in astrocytes — star-shaped brain cells that support neurons — can convert them into neurons. The adult brain has very limited capacity to replace neurons lost to disease like Alzheimer's. If developed into a human treatment, the gel-based approach could replenish lost neurons and restore brain function.
