Protein from American bullfrog could neutralise deadly shellfish toxin with no known antidote

A study in mice found that a protein called saxiphilin, found in the American bullfrog, acts like a sponge to absorb a deadly toxin produced by algal blooms. The toxin accumulates in certain seafood and can cause life-threatening paralytic shellfish poisoning, for which no antidote currently exists. The research raises hopes for a future treatment.
