Meta to pay up to $16.7bn and overhaul Instagram and Facebook in US settlement

Meta has agreed to pay up to $16.7 billion and make sweeping changes to Instagram and Facebook to settle a major US lawsuit. The case, brought by 29 state attorneys general, alleged Meta knowingly designed its platforms to addict children despite being aware of the harms they posed to young users. The settlement spares Meta from a trial that could have cost it hundreds of billions of dollars.
