Childhood trauma may physically alter DNA packaging in brain cells

Research on mice found that early-life stress can physically alter how DNA is packaged inside brain cells, leaving stress-related genes primed to activate more easily years later. This mechanism led to heightened anxiety and increased stress sensitivity in adulthood. Researchers were able to block the effect in mice, preventing the stress-related changes from taking hold.
