Tighter blood pressure guidelines mean nearly 10 million more Americans should take medication

The American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Cardiology (ACC) now define normal blood pressure as no higher than 120/80 mmHg. A new analysis published in JAMA finds that under these stricter guidelines, nearly 10 million more American adults should be on antihypertensive medication to reduce mortality risk. Cardiologists are urging adoption of the tightened threshold in clinical practice.
