Antwerp unveils monument to victims of 1894 'human zoo' at World's Fair
In 1894, during Antwerp's World's Fair, over a hundred Congolese people were forcibly brought to the city and put on display in a so-called "human zoo" at the Congo Pavilion; seven of them died of disease. This year Belgium unveiled a monument to the victims, confronting one of the darkest chapters of its colonial past.
