Scientists find how gut bacteria train the intestine to fight inflammation long-term
Researchers at Northwestern Medicine found that butyrate, a compound produced when gut bacteria break down dietary fibre, can reprogram intestinal lining cells to sustain anti-inflammatory immune responses even after the compound itself is gone. In mice, this lasting effect boosted production of the immune-calming molecule IL-10 and reduced the severity of colitis-like disease. The findings suggest gut bacteria can leave a durable protective "memory" in the intestine.
