Overbooking is legal, but airlines must compensate bumped passengers

Selling more tickets than there are seats on a flight is legal for airlines. However, carriers that practise overbooking are obliged both to look after affected passengers and to pay them financial compensation. Passengers denied boarding are entitled to a payout under applicable regulations.
