Cats identify each other via fatty acids in urine, study finds

A new study published August 19 in Current Biology found that branched-chain fatty acids (BFAs) give cats their unique scent signatures in urine. Unusual fat droplets in cats' kidneys help maintain this chemical fingerprint. The discovery adds cats to a growing list of mammals known to use specific chemical signatures for individual recognition.
