Speed of warming, not total heat, threatens Atlantic Ocean currents collapse

A new study finds that Atlantic Ocean currents can withstand gradual warming of up to 5°C above preindustrial levels, but rapid warming driven by current greenhouse gas emission rates may trigger a catastrophic collapse at just 2°C. Under slow warming, the entire ocean has time to reorganise and adapt. The key factor is not total temperature rise, but the speed at which it occurs.
