Airline crews face highest radiation doses of any profession — higher cancer death rates

New research shows airline crew members receive the highest annual ionising radiation doses of over 500 occupational groups studied — between 3 and 6 mSv per year, compared with around 0.4 mSv for a typical passenger taking 10 domestic flights. The cause is cosmic radiation, which is far more intense at cruising altitude. The exposure translates into a significantly higher cancer death rate among flight personnel.
