AI still far from recursive self-improvement, Princeton-led study finds

A multi-institution research team led by Peter Kirgis and Sayash Kapoor at Princeton University found that AI agents are not yet capable of conducting open-ended AI research without human oversight. While models can handle engineering tasks, they lack the judgment and creativity needed for self-directed AI improvement. The finding suggests that recursive self-improvement may be further off than the industry's most optimistic forecasts predict.
