Duke Conrad of Masovia ordered the blinding and strangling of Voivode Krystyn, his most capable military commander and the defender of Masovia's borders, known as the "Shield of Masovia". Despite years of loyal service repelling pagan raids, Krystyn was executed on the duke's orders. Historians argue the crime had catastrophic consequences for Poland as a whole.
