Triple-negative breast cancer hijacks immune cells to recruit nerves and fuel its growth

Researchers have found that triple-negative breast cancer appears to recruit macrophages — immune cells normally involved in healing — and use them to release a protein called BDNF that draws nerves into the tumour. Those nerves may then help the cancer grow, resist treatment, and spread. The discovery reveals a new mechanism by which the tumour turns the body's own defences against itself.
