Animals have been digesting natural bioplastic for millions of years

Researchers have found that dozens of animal species carry enzymes capable of breaking down microbial bioplastics known as PHAs — an ability previously thought to belong only to microorganisms. The discovery suggests animals may have been feeding on this natural biodegradable material for hundreds of millions of years, long before humans invented synthetic plastics.
