Mold on a tomato — is cutting off the spot safe?

Many people simply cut off the moldy spot on a tomato and eat the rest, but food-safety experts warn that with soft produce the visible mold is only part of the problem. Fungal threads penetrate deep into soft tissue, meaning even visually clean areas may contain harmful mycotoxins. While cutting away 2–3 cm around mold is acceptable for hard foods like carrots or hard cheese, soft fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes should be discarded entirely.
