One week of intensive meditation alters the brain similarly to psychedelics, study finds
Scientists studied 20 healthy adults before and after a seven-day retreat combining intensive meditation with mind-body exercises. Brain and blood tests revealed changes in inter-regional brain communication, metabolism, immune function and pain regulation. Some patterns resembled those previously documented during psychedelic-induced altered states, and researchers also detected signs of increased neuroplasticity.
