European drought reveals centuries-old "hunger stones" and other historical warnings
Record heat and severe drought across Europe have caused river levels to drop to historic lows, exposing artefacts hidden for decades or even centuries. In Germany, so-called hunger stones have re-emerged — inscriptions carved by earlier generations to mark dangerously low water levels, often heralding famine. One such stone bears the inscription: "If you see me, weep."
