Bacteria lock away 95% of toxic uranium in just 130 days, study finds

Researchers have found that bacteria living deep underground can trap toxic uranium before it spreads. When microbes in uranium-contaminated mine water were fed glycerol, about 95% of the dissolved uranium disappeared within 130 days. The bacteria converted it into an unusually stable uranium compound that had rarely been observed before.
