Cortisol scrambles the brain's internal GPS, MRI study shows
An MRI study found that cortisol, the stress hormone, made people significantly worse at navigating a virtual environment and disrupted the activity of grid cells — specialised brain cells that track spatial position. When landmarks were absent, the navigation system nearly shut down, while another brain region appeared to compensate. The findings help explain why stress impairs spatial orientation in everyday life.
