Tick-transmitted meat allergy reaches Poland

The first cases of tick-induced meat allergy, known as alpha-gal syndrome, are emerging in Poland. A tick bite introduces a substance that causes an immune reaction to alpha-galactose, a sugar found in mammalian meat. For those affected, eating beef, pork or lamb can trigger a potentially life-threatening anaphylactic reaction.
