id Software boosted Doom sales by deliberately legitimising pirates in the '90s
In the 1990s, id Software deliberately reached out to pirates and helped legitimise their operations as a marketing strategy for Doom. The first episode was distributed free as shareware, while later levels required purchase — pirates effectively expanded the reach of the free demo. The developers admitted they were "totally happy" with the arrangement.
