Pacific island nation Nauru officially renames itself Naoero to shed colonial legacy

Nauru's President David Adeang has announced the Pacific island state will officially revert to its traditional name, Naoero. The change aims to protect the local language and shed the country's colonial legacy. Naoero is the world's smallest republic; the traditional name already appeared on the national coat of arms.
