Ultra-processed food firms sue and deny as science closes in on their products
The science linking ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer is now considered settled, yet food and drink manufacturers continue to deny the evidence and file lawsuits to fend off regulation. The strategy mirrors tactics used by the tobacco and fossil-fuel industries. Companies argue there are no inherently bad foods, only poor overall diets, as a way to delay legal restrictions on their products.
