Protein TRF2 is essential for muscle repair — without it, tissue turns to fat and scar
Researchers have found that the protein TRF2, previously known mainly for protecting chromosome ends, is also essential for muscle stem cells to function properly. TRF2 helps these cells maintain their identity and coordinate the cycle of rest, repair and renewal. When the protein is absent, damaged muscle tissue turns to fat and scar tissue instead of regenerating.
