Ant brains show how hunger evolved into parenting instinct
Researchers have found that parenting behaviour in clonal raider ants may have evolved from the same brain systems that once controlled hunger. Two chemical signals push the ants toward either larva care or foraging, with the balance shifting as they age. Similar signals underlie mammalian caregiving, suggesting evolution used the same basic blueprint across vastly different species.
