The tank-trap myth: How a spontaneous 1944 parade killed hundreds in Warsaw
One of the most enduring images of the Warsaw Uprising — a booby-trapped tank as a deliberate German ruse — is largely a historical myth. In reality, hundreds of people, including civilians, died as a result of a spontaneous gathering and parade around an abandoned tank in August 1944.
