Inflammation may trigger 'out-of-body' experiences, early research suggests

Preliminary research, accepted for publication and currently under peer review, suggests that chronic inflammation triggered by trauma may underlie dissociation — a mental state that includes out-of-body experiences and feelings of unreality. The study is based on correlations between blood inflammatory markers and symptoms and cannot prove causation. If confirmed by follow-up work, the findings could open the door to anti-inflammatory treatments for dissociative conditions.
