Your gut helps your brain decide what to remember, study finds

Signals traveling from the gut to the brain via the vagus nerve may help convert meals into lasting memories. Rats showed stronger memory activity after eating nutritious food, but not after drinking sweet liquids with little nutritional value. Blocking the vagus nerve erased this effect and impaired the animals' ability to remember food locations. Diets high in fat and sugar also weakened this memory system over time.
