Human eyes may trace back to a one-eyed ancestor from 600 million years ago

Researchers say a tiny one-eyed creature that lived nearly 600 million years ago may have shaped the evolution of every vertebrate eye, including humans'. The ancient median eye of this ancestor survives today as the pineal gland, which helps synchronise sleep with daylight cycles. The findings offer new insight into the deep evolutionary origins of the vertebrate visual system.
