Yale scientists discover the heart has its own mini-brain
Scientists at Yale University School of Medicine have discovered that neurons surrounding the heart form an intrinsic nervous system that functions like a small brain. Embedded in the fatty tissue around the organ, these nerve cells communicate both with each other and with the brain, modulating heart rhythm in real time. Their role includes regulating the body's stress response.
